Understanding English Texts
The book entitled Understanding English Texts: Some Strategies for Effective Reading for Non-English Students is very useful for university students who study general English as compulsory subject. The role of this subject is so urgent for students as a basic skill to read and understand texts written in English, especially texts dealing with the subject interest chosen by the students. The ability to read in English is very important for students to enrich their knowledge and self development. By having these reading skills, the students as the member intellectual society will have a tool as a means of pursuing varieties of knowledge, and at the same time, have broad perspective. Besides that, as we know that most of literatures in libraries at most universities are written in English. By having English literatures, the students can gain knowledge from the original sources. Realizing this condition, the government or stakeholder through university curriculum include English subject, as general subject and it is a compulsory subject which deals with understanding English Texts. English, as international language, is the first foreign language in Indonesia whose role is very important. Meanwhile, the books which deal with reading skills, especially with strategies of understanding English texts are very limited. Students and instructors have difficulty to find the appropriate book for this purpose. The other constrain is that textbooks containing the way how to read English texts which are related to their interest are also very limited. Most of the books are very general for all language skills and are not focused on strategies used for reading in English texts effectively so that they are appropriate for the goal of the subject. This student textbook is prepared to overcome these constrains and for this series the book is designed for students of social science, learning psychology, and medicine. The reading topics in this book were chosenbased on their fields so that the students will be more familiar with new vocabulary and master technical words related to their subjects. Beside that, the beginning part of this book provides with some reading strategies and familiarizing new vocabulary and understanding difficult words. This is done so that the students can use the strategies and able to learn how to read appropriately without considerable help from others. This book comes into existence with the help of many people, friends, and colleagues; among others, lecturers who have used this book as teaching materials in the first version and gave some input, suggestions and comments. Also, the students who have followed the process of teaching and learning reading in the class and gave some contributions are of very grateful. These students have also given some motivation to the writer to prepare and write the book. By accommodating these suggestions, the book constituted the process of revision. For this reason, it is appropriate for the writer to extend his appreciation for those who have given the criticism, Nevertheless, the writer realizes that this book is not said to be perfect, especially in overcoming the varieties of reading problems in every learning process. Some comments and suggestions are welcome for the improvement of the book in the future.
