Fundamentals of English Grammar is a developmental skills text for, lower-intermediaternand intermediate students of English as a second or foreign language. It combines clearrnand understandable grammar information with a variety of exercises and activities.rnFundamentals of English Grammar is the second in a series of three texts: Basic EnglishrnGrammar (red cover), Fundamentals of English Grammar (black cover), and Understandingrnand Using English Grammar (blue cover).rnThe principal aims of all three texts in this series are to present clear, cogentrninformation about English grammar and usage, to provide extensive and varied practicernthat encourages growth in all areas of language use, and to be interesting, useful, and funrnfor student and teacher alike. The approach is eclectic, with the texts seeking to balancernform-focused language-learning activities with abundant opportunities for engaged andrnpurposeful communicative interaction.rnThe new editions of the texts in the Azar Grammar Series include these chnges:rn• The communicative aspects are more fully developed and explicit in the thirdrneditions. This edition of Fundamentals of English Grammar includes a greatlyrnincreased number of “real communication” opportunites for the teacher to exploit.rnThe text often uses the students’ own life experiences as context and regularlyrnintroduces topics of interest to stimulate the free expression of ideas in structured asrnwell as open discussions.rnThe Azar Grammar Series texts support the view of many experienced teachersrnthat grammar-based and communicative approaches are not mutually exclusive, butrnrather mutually supportive, and can advantageously co-exist in the same languagernprogram, even in the same class, even in the same lesson.rnSimilarly, the interactive aspects of the texts receive greater emphasis in the thirdrneditions. Many of the exercises formerly designated ORAL or ORAL (BOOKS CLOSED)rnàre now reformatted to be more clearly available for pair work or group work, inrnaddition to still being viable as class work led by a teacher. This edition ofrnFundamentals of English Grammar encourages interactivity but leaves it open for thernusers to decide what degree of interactivity best suits their needs. °rn. There is now an even wider variety of exercise types. This edition has a much largerrnnumber of free-response exercises and open-ended communicative tasks, while stillrnproviding ample controlled-response exercises to aid initial understanding of thernform, meaning, and usage of the target structures. It also includes more writingrntopics, more speaking activities, new error-analysis exercises in every chapter, andadditional extended-context exercises. Classroom teaching materials formerlyrnfound in the Workbook are now included in this student text, with the Workbookrndevoted solely to self-study exercises. The Workbook has a variety of practicernapproaches for independent study.rn• A specific change in this edition of Fundamentals of English Grammar is the twornAppendices, one with phrasal verbs and one with preposition combinations. Ratherrnthan asking students to study a whole chapter of these phrases at one time, the textrnuses appendices to present them in smaller groupings for teachers to interspersernthroughout the teaching term. Another specific change is the omission ofrnconditional sentences, which are presented in Understanding and Using EnglishrnGrammar.rn• The accompanying Teacher’s Guide is written for both experienced andrninexperienced teachers. It contains amplified grammar notes the teacher mightrnwant to present to the class or will find useful as background information. Itrnoutlines various ways of approaching the materials in the classroom and frequentlyrnsuggests fresh teaching ideas for individual exercises beyond the directions in therntext. It seeks to share with the teacher an understanding of the rationale behind therntext’s content and approaches. Its principal purpose is to make the busy teacher’srnjob easier.rnFundamentals of English Grammar consists ofrn• a Student Book without an answer keyrn• a Student Book with an answer keyrn• a Workbook, consisting of self-study exercises for independent workrn. a Chartbook, a reference book consisting of only the grammar chartsrn• a Teacher’s Guide, with teaching suggestions and additional notes on grammar, asrnwell as the answers to the exercisesrn. a Test Bank
