English subject for non-English students at University is mainly aimed at increasing students’ capability to understand a text written in English and other scientific texts and academic English as well. By having this skill, the students are expected to be independent readers of academic or scientific English texts without any special help. In a long term, the students are hoped to acquire science and technology by means of reading materials written in English and can benefit to have self development and to increase their academic profession. The English subject at university, as general English, is basically in form of enrichment of english profession that they have got previously. However, for some reasons, their capability in English of most students is still low, except those who are English students and English teachers. The main problem is due to the lack of exposure of English as their daily need as a means of communication, getting information to increase their knowledge. Through this book, the students are equipped with some techniques and strategies of how to comprehend English texts. Thus, with this way the students are supposed to be able to read actively and effectively; they learn by themselves developing their learning style based on their own way. They are trained how to gain scientific information in English texts in the field of education and other related fields. The material presented in this book deals with reading strategies which constitute word attack strategy, guessing meaning from context, analyzing the structure of English sentence, such as identifying subject, predicate, clauses, and phrase, contextual references, definition and description. The students also learn how to analyze paragraph and its structure so that they are able to identify topic sentence and supporting detail. These skills are very important for optimal comprehension. This book is prepared for reading learners to have an opportunity to increase their skills in reading or understanding English texts and other academic English texts such as education, psychology and other fields. By having these skills, the students can be independent reader of written English without any help. Having finished the book or the lecturer, it is hoped that in the future the students become a good reader, able to get information through reading; able to have science and technology information from reading materials. In the final goal it can increase human resources as the final goal of national education. Besides that, the book can be used by the teachers as teaching material or as a reference book for students who want to increase their reading skill. The aim of the book is to give reading skill for the first year student at university. It provides students some reading strategies, enriches their vocabulary that is useful to support their reading skill. By having this, the student has no serious problem getting information from text book written in English dealing with different subject especially in the field of education. Students are able share their ideas based on the result of their reading. This book contains materials dealing with skills or strategies which are useful for enriching reading capability. This includes word meaning in contact, that is, the skill of finding the meaning of unknown word based on its contact, understanding sentence, including the ability of classifying the part of sentence; the strategy of understanding difficult words by morphological analysis and strategy of enriching vocabulary, Another part deals with exercise on reading including understanding and finding topic sentence and developing sentence. The other part is about the skills and practice dealing with extensive reading. The reading topics in this book are selected based on some field of study especially on social studies. Some of them are related to medicine, economics, psychology, etc. Other materials include reading tests for students to practice and to measure their reading competency. This subject (General English) is prepared for the first year student at university; it is aimed at giving reading skills. The students are able to understand texts written in English; they are able to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words based on their contexts, determining unit of thought in a sentence in form of phrase and understand their meaning. They are able to share the information from the text they read. rnIndicators :rnThe students are able to 1) use some reading strategies in understanding written text in English be familiar with many kinds of vocabulary and enrich their vocabulary mastery especially dealing with educational field or academic English. The vocabulary also deals with social science, law, learning psychology, and health depending on their major. 2) identify the structure words by means of morphological analysis to enrich their vocabulary. 3) identify the structure of words related to sentence formation in a paragraph as basic of understanding texts. 4) develop some reading skills, such as guessing meaning from context, inferencing, getting main idea, etc. 5) develop and implement reading strategies like skimming and scanning. 6) identify main idea in a paragraph and other supporting idea. 7) identify types of discourse pattern, like, pattern of equence, comparison and contrast, cause and effect, etc. 8) make note taking based on the texts and summary from a text.
